Updates to All-Time Program Records

Posted June 1, 2010

With the end of a highly successful year for the Wildcats, a number of players have now placed themselves prominently in Wildcat lacrosse history. Junior Ryan Lucey is now the program’s third leading scorer, behind only Tony Mendes and Scot Meyer. Lucey’s 164 total points eclipses Cody Kelly’s totals in a career that saw Kelly achieve All-American status and the 2004 NCHSAA state championship. What makes Lucey’s accomplishment so incredible deals with his past two injury-plagued seasons, where he has missed a total of 15 games. This season Lucey scored 8 points against Cedar Ridge, moving him onto the “Most Points in a Game” list, tied with Mendes for third most points in a game. Lucey was averaging more than 4 points per game before his season-ending knee injury at Laney High School in Wilmington, where he already scored two goals in one quarter of play.

Senior Jack Yusko tallied 10 points against Orange High School to move to the top of the list, tied with Dwight Weld, Mendes, Meyer and Curtis Baker. Yusko also finished his career with 118 points, and his 34 goals this season puts him on the all-time season scoring list.

Season Wrap Up: Awards and Records

Posted May 20, 2010

While the 2010 season ended on the wrong night in the wrong town, the Wildcats accomplished many individual and team records and awards. The undefeated regular season was a first for the Wildcats, and the final regular-season victory over Orange High School represented the 100th win for Coach Franklin Zirkle in his sixth season at East. The overall team record during his tenure is 103-21 with two state final appearances and three consecutive semifinal appearances. The 20 wins marked the highest win total in team history. The team averaged more than 14 goals per game, and the stingy defense yielded four goals per game on average.

Perfect Season Comes to an End at Apex

Cats lose in semifinals, 6-13

Posted May 13, 2010

The Wildcats had learned in 2010 how to play on the road, and they found themselves overly tested as road warriors. With the NCHSAA taking over the sport comes a series of new rules, formulas and regulations that allowed a 17-0 conference champion to travel for three games against three No. 1 conference seeds. While the Wildcats handled the first two trips with great resolve, their ninth life or third trip of their feline playoff experience ended at Apex High School. The homestanding Cougars entered the contest with a 14-3 record and benefited greatly with four consecutive home games in front of a very loud and supportive fan base.

In the Battle of Undefeateds, East Comes Out on Top, 9-8 in OT

Posted May 8, 2010

On a perfect evening in Raleigh, in front of a large crowd, the Wildcats and Crusaders went toe to toe like two heavyweight fighters. While East was able to hit the first goal on a Leo Moran shot fed by senior goalkeeper Graham Kawula (yep, that's right), they soon found themselves in an unfamiliar spot, down several goals. The Wildcats’ second goal was an inside shot by freshman Baxter Perkins, who was fed by senior Jack Yusko. Shortly after that goal, junior Steven Augustine won another faceoff and hit junior Chandler Zirkle on the point, who hit Yusko cutting in front of the goal. Yusko froze the Crusaders’ keeper and helped to keep the score close. Still, the Crusaders would go on a scoring run that would allow them to take a 5-4 lead into the second half.

Wildcats Travel to Durham and Ground the Falcons, 13-9

Posted May 5, 2010

For the first 15 minutes of Tuesday night’s matchup between Jordan and the Wildcats, it looked like the Wildcats could not score a goal or make a save. The Falcons raced out to a 2-0 lead, and while the Wildcats waited for their patented scoring barrage, it did not emerge until Jordan reeled off another two goals to take a 4-0 lead early in the second quarter. Wildcat fans feverishly checked their ticket stubs to ensure that they were at the right game, but within a few minutes the black-clad felines unleashed an offensive onslaught triggered by the trio of Steven Augustine, Kord Scharfenberg and Thomas Meyer.

Wildcats Corral Mustangs in Round 1, 14-3

Posted May 1, 2010

It seemed rather fitting, with the Wildcats averaging only 3.4 goals against and 14 goals scored per game, that the final outcome of the first-round playoff game would end 14-3. Junior midfielder Steven Augustine was again superb as he won 80 percent of his faceoffs and continued to eradicate the season ground ball record set last season by Culen Wilson. Senior Jack Yusko had a great evening, scoring five goals and handing out two assists. In one sequence, Yusko took a shot, picked up a rebound in mid air and shot past the goalie. His running mates on attack, junior Chandler Zirkle and sophomore Leo Moran added one goal and three assists and three goals respectively.

Wildcats Complete First Undefeated Regular Season,
Down Orange, 15-1

Posted April 23, 2010

On Wednesday night, the East Lacrosse community honored 16 talented seniors prior to the season ending contest with Orange High School. After honoring these players and their parents, the Cats sent out an all-senior squad for the opening faceoff. Senior Austin Taylor handled the goalie duties for the Wildcats, while fellow goaltender Graham Kawula started the game on defense and eventually put his own stamp on the season finale later in the game.

Kawula Leads Wildcats Past a Feisty Grimsley Squad, 6-4

Posted April 19, 2010

On a bright day in Greensboro, the Wildcats forgot to pack their shooting accuracy on the activity bus. Before the Wildcats knew what hit them, they found themselves down 2-0 to the Whirlies. Senior goalkeeper Graham Kawula, determined to make up for a losing effort the year before on the same field, came out on fire and turned away 17 Grimsley shots, many at point-blank range. The stingy East defense, yielding less than four goals per game this season, made several determined stands to shut down other scoring opportunities in the first half. The three starting defenders playing in front of Kawula — seniors Thomas Meyer and Noel Myers along with freshman William McEntee — played lights-out defense, forcing a total of 12 turnovers and controlling 11 ground balls. Many of these turnovers were created near the goal, denying the white-clad opponents’ shots from less than five yards. Senior Carson McGuffin and junior Collin Elledge were also a force playing as long stick midfielders.

Wildcats Shut Out Knights, 16-0

Posted April 18, 2010

The Wildcats traveled to Northern Durham on Friday night to make up a game that was postponed at the beginning of the season. The Wildcats, without several starters, found themselves in an offensive groove early as they raced out to a 5-0 lead in the first quarter. Sophomore Leo Moran would start the scoring and end the night with five goals and one assist. Junior Chandler Zirkle would lead the Wildcats in scoring with one goal and six assists. Several players tallied two goals on the evening, including freshman Baxter Perkins, senior John Wolf and junior Steven Augustine. Senior Casey Hastings had a goal on the evening and played both attack and midfield. Senior LSM Thomas Meyer had an assist and caused three turnovers. He also scooped up eight ground balls.

Wildcats Defeat Red Wolves, 13-7

Posted April 14, 2010

Fresh off a draining win on Friday night, the Wildcats traveled to Cedar Ridge for a conference game. This marked the first time East has traveled to their neighboring Orange County school since Sam Carpenter was the head coach, and Coach Z was the referee on this game (and Luke Andrews was a defenseman for the Red Wolves). Once again, there was a dominating long-stick midfielder playing offense, this time it was senior captain Thomas Meyer, who had several forced turnovers, an assist and five ground balls on the evening. His fellow defensive captain, Noel Myers, sat out the game along with injured seniors Jack Yusko and Cristo Briceno.

Wildcats Defeat Tigers in Classic Cross-Town Rivalry, 11-10

Posted April 10, 2010

The Chapel Hill Tigers invaded Wildcat Stadium intent on stopping the Wildcats’ winning streak. Early in the game, it looked like just that would happen as Coach Cappelletti’s black-clad Tigers opened an early lead. East committed several critical turnovers, and the Tigers were quite opportunistic. Chapel Hill would open the scoring and take a quick 3-0 lead before the Wildcats answered with senior Kord Scharfenberg’s first goal. Shortly after, senior midfielder Cristo Briceno took matters into his own hands and cranked a shot that beat the Chapel Hill goalie high. Junior Steven Augustine answered with a faceoff win, and six seconds later he shot the ball past Redfoot.

Wildcats Leap on Jaguars Early, Win Rematch 15-5

Posted April 7, 2010

Coming back from spring break is always an adventure for teams, especially those sports that require stick skills. The Wildcats seemed to pick up right where they left off in the third quarter against Dublin Ohio, with an offensive juggernaut early in the game. The Wildcats, led by Steven Augustine and his perfect night facing off, scored the first eight goals of the game. Augustine would end up with 20 faceoff wins and 16 ground balls on the evening. He also tallied a goal and played well on both ends of the field.

Wildcats Start Slow Before Picking Off Shamrocks, 9-5

Posted March 29, 2010

Playing in their third game in four days, the Wildcats had to deal with adversity and a slow start against a talented Dublin Coffman team from Ohio. The Cats found themselves in an unfamiliar position, down at halftime and outshot by the visiting Shamrocks. Just like death and taxes, Steven Augustine continued his inevitable winning ways facing off, winning more than 82 percent of his attempts and even starting several fast breaks. Augustine also picked up another Gopher award, winning 16 ground balls on the evening.

Wildcats Defeat Wildcats:
East beats team from the east, 21-1

Posted March 27, 2010

Less than 24 hours after playing Wilmington Laney, the black-clad Wildcats went to Memorial Stadium to take on the Wildcats of New Hanover High School. In this contest, the team from East Chapel Hill took a commanding lead, led initially by senior Jack Yusko, who supplied three goals and two assists in short order. Junior Leo Moran, inspired by the sea air, scored twice and added two assists. Junior Chandler Zirkle picked up where he left off the night before, this time scoring two goals and adding seven assists.

Cat Defense Parks the Jaguars, 17-2

Posted March 24, 2010

Tuesday marked the end of the first half of the conference schedule for the visiting Wildcats. The game was played in what seemed like gale-force winds, leaving fans and players wondering what happened to spring. Steven Augustine continued his winning ways with another stellar night facing off for the Cats; he ended the evening with a winning percentage of more than 82 percent and eventually gave way to Ben Krichman, who won all of his draws. Augustine also increased his offensive production with a goal and two assists.

Posted March 19, 2010

For this group of veteran Cats, Friday, March 19, marked the end of an era against the powerful Tigers of Chapel Hill High School. The Wildcats picked up a decisive defensive victory led by Coach Jacob Manning’s stifling and swarming band of long poles. The Cats limited the Tigers to three goals late in the fourth quarter, while the offense got in gear relatively early.

Wildcat Defense Endangers Red Wolves

Posted March 16, 2010

Continuing where they left off just a few nights before, the starting defense appeared to surround the pack of Red Wolves with an impenetrable wall for the first half of Tuesday night’s game at Wildcat Stadium, which the Cats won 14-3. Senior Noel Myers continued his stellar play, with several forced turnovers, successful clears and his first goal of the season. Fellow defender Thomas Meyer led the team with nine ground balls and also triggered fast breaks and made numerous forced turnovers.

Wildcats Punctuate, While Caps Underscore

Posted March 14, 2010

Saturday's much-anticipated matchup between the black-clad Wildcats and the golden Caps started on a Jack Yusko goal early in the game. The scoring would then stay close in the first quarter, as Broughton had two goals by Arthur Kyner, both assisted by Mitchell Dupere (a former Dirt Dauber teammate with a number of the current Cats). Senior Kord Scharfenberg, displaying an overdrive gear several times in transition, added the second tally for East. Senior Will Armstrong, who had an excellent game on both ends of the field, provided a nifty score off a successful ride to put the Cats up 3-1.

Northern Durham Game Moved to Thursday Night

Posted March 2, 2010

With the winter storm passing through the area on Tuesday night, the varsity game has been moved to Thursday night at 6 p.m. This should allow the Northern field enough time to dry before the opening contest for both programs. The Wildcats are coming off a good showing against powerful Holly Springs on Friday night in Wildcat Stadium. While final scores are not kept during scrimmages, the Wildcats displayed both a powerful defense that yielded only three goals and a revamped offense that capitalized on extra-man opportunities as well as transition goals.

The Cats return home on Friday night to face Western Alamance. This will be a double header, with Coach Bridges’ junior varsity Cats taking the field for the first time at 5 p.m. The JV team has real depth this season, and Coach Bridges will be working with a balanced mix of freshmen, sophomores and juniors.

A Few Images from the Holly Springs Scrimmage

Friday Night’s Preseason Scrimmage is Varsity Only;
Season Play Begins Next Week

The Wildcats open the 2010 season with a preseason scrimmage against Coach Doug Greenberg’s highly ranked Holly Springs team. Originally this was scheduled as a varsity and junior varsity double header, but with the several days of inclement weather the stadium field needs to be protected for the duration of the season, thus only one game will be played. The scrimmage will begin at 7 p.m. at Wildcat Stadium under a creative format where both teams will
scrimmage for the first three quarters of running time; in the fourth segment both teams will work on specialty situations.

On Tuesday, March 2, the Wildcats travel to Northern Durham to play the Knights in the season opener for both teams. Northern does not field a junior varsity program, so the varsity game will begin at 6 p.m.  For directions to Northern’s lacrosse complex, please click here.

The March 5 home opener against Western Alamance will be a varsity and junior varsity doubleheader. Please arrive early to cheer on the JV team in their opening game.

Middle Creek Scrimmage Canceled Due to Inclement Weather

The Varsity scrimmage against Middle Creek scheduled for Wednesday, February 24, has been canceled due to the winter weather. The scrimmage will not be made up since the opening day of the season is March 1. The Wildcats will host Holly Springs in a varsity/junior varsity double header on Friday. The first scrimmage will begin at 5 p.m. in Wildcat Stadium.
